TAKE HOME ACTIVITIES FOR TEACHERS

SESSION 1

The first session is a review of some of the concepts we discussed the previous year, including the social, emotional and physical changes of puberty, the role of hormones during puberty, new body hair, body odor, acne, feelings of attraction, wanting more alone time, privacy and independence, mood swings, sudden feelings of sadness, loneliness and anger, and identifying trusted and knowledgeable adults in your home and school life.

SESSION 2

The session reviews the concepts of consent, bodily autonomy, unsafe secrets and sexual abuse. This session will also include discussion about sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex assigned at birth. Learn about NYC Public Schools' guidelines on teaching about gender identity and sex assigned at birth here.

SESSION 3

The focus of this session is Tanner Stages I, II, III, IV and V, the anatomy of the genitals and reproductive organs, and how and why these organs change during puberty to allow for reproduction.

SESSION 4

The focus of this session is understanding the menstrual cycle, menstrual symptoms and supplies and reproduction via the fallopian tubes and uterus. From there, we'll discuss how Assisted Reproductive Technology, adoption, surrogacy, and egg and sperm donation help people to have a child (if they choose to). From there, we'll talk about the basics of pre-natal development and birth.

*The Grade 5 Four Session Program is designed for schools with a Grade 4 program in place
