TAKE HOME ACTIVITIES FOR TEACHERS

SESSION 1

This session focuses on introducing the who, what, when and whys of puberty. We'll read a fictional story about a child who is experiencing some of the social, emotional and physical changes of puberty, and how those changes are affecting them. Topics that are introduced include the role of hormones during puberty, new body hair, body odor, acne, feelings of attraction, wanting more alone time, privacy and independence, mood swings, sudden feelings of sadness, loneliness and anger, and identifying trusted and knowledgeable adults in your home and school life.

SESSION 2

This session introduces the concepts of bodily autonomy (ownership over your body) and consent (permission for something to happen that involves you or your body). We'll also talk about unsafe secrets and unsafe touch. This session will wrap up with discussion about why body odor starts before or during puberty, and information about deodorant and hygiene.

SESSION 3

Our third session introduces the first two stages of puberty, and how a child knows they've started puberty. These first stages of puberty, Tanner Stages I and II, include mood swings, body odor, breast development, testicle enlargement, and pubic hair growth.
